Villa & house architects in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is where most of our homes stand. Since 2009 we have designed more than thirty villas and family houses in the city – from classical, column-and-cornice mansions to dark, stacked contemporary volumes and glass pavilions – many of them for families who came to us through earlier clients.

Houses here have to work with the desert: deep overhangs, courtyards and jaali screens that cut the sun, local sandstone and plaster that age well, and planning that keeps the family together on tight urban plots. Each house is carried through by our own site engineers, so what is drawn is what gets built.

Summer in Jodhpur is long and the light is hard, so a house here is planned around shade first. We orient living rooms away from the west, bring light in through courtyards and deep-set windows rather than big exposed glass, and use jaali screens, verandahs and overhangs so the family can sit outside in the evening. Thick walls, light-coloured roofs and cross-ventilation do more for comfort than any air-conditioner, and they cost nothing to run.

Local sandstone, lime plaster and stone flooring suit the city: they stay cool, they age well and they are worked by craftsmen who live here. Where a family wants a contemporary house – stacked concrete volumes, glass pavilions, dark stone – the same rules apply underneath; the climate does not care about style.

Every house begins with a conversation about how the family lives: who cooks, where guests are received, whether parents will live with the family, how festivals and weddings are hosted. From that we draw a plan, then 3D views and a material board, and only then the detailed drawings a contractor can build from – structure, services, joinery, stone layouts and lighting.
