A showroom has to make a buyer slow down. For the Pelican marble showroom we designed a sequence of vaulted, material-led rooms that was later featured in The Architects Diary; for Mangi Chand Bhandari and Manohar Jewellers we designed stores where lighting, display cases and seating are planned around how a family chooses jewellery.

Retail work includes the façade and signage, interior planning, custom display furniture, lighting design and the security and back-of-house areas a store needs.

Jewellery stores: light, seating and security

A jewellery store is designed around a conversation at a counter. We plan seating so a family can sit together, lighting that renders gold and stones truthfully without glare, display cases that are secure but easy to serve from, and private rooms for high-value selections. Strong rooms, CCTV and staff routes are planned into the drawings from the start, not added later.

For Mangi Chand Bhandari and Manohar Jewellers the façade and signage were designed with the interior, so the store reads as one piece from the street to the counter.

Showrooms that let the product lead

The Pelican marble showroom works as a sequence of vaulted rooms, each finished in the material it sells, so a visitor experiences the stone rather than reading about it; The Architects Diary later featured it. The same idea – let the product be the architecture – applies to furniture, textile and sanitaryware showrooms.

Our retail scope covers façade and signage, planning, custom display furniture, lighting design, security and back-of-house, with our site engineers supervising the fit-out in Jodhpur.

From brief to opening day

A retail project starts with a site visit and a conversation about the customer: who they are, how they shop, how long they stay. We then prepare a concept and 3D views, plans and elevations, display furniture and joinery drawings, lighting design and a material board, with an estimate and a fit-out programme so the opening date is planned rather than hoped for.

Our site engineers supervise the fit-out in Jodhpur and the principal architect reviews finishes and lighting before the store opens; display units are made to our drawings by workshops we have worked with for years.

Frequently asked questions

Do you design the display furniture as well?

Yes – display cases, counters and seating are drawn by us and made by craftsmen we have worked with for years, so the store reads as one piece.

How long does a showroom project take?

It depends on size and finishes; we give a design and fit-out programme after the first briefing and site visit.
