Our Uttarakhand work begins with the AC Hotel by Marriott in Dehradun, designed to the brand’s standards for the state capital. Dehradun is a five-hour drive from our New Delhi studio, which lets the principal architect and site engineers visit through construction.

Hill sites ask for the same discipline as our hillside resort at Madar Lake in Udaipur: follow the contours, keep cars at the bottom, let stone and timber do the work, and give every room its own view.

The AC Hotel by Marriott in Dehradun is a 90-key hotel designed to the brand’s standards for the state capital: efficient guest rooms, a lobby and dining that work for business travellers and weekend visitors alike, and back-of-house planned before the front so that the hotel runs quietly. It is the kind of city hotel that Dehradun, Haridwar and Haldwani now need as the state’s economy grows.

Hill sites ask for a particular discipline, and it is one we practise at The Madar Lake Resort & Spa for Hilton in Udaipur: let the master plan follow the contours, keep cars at the arrival level and move guests up by cart, step the guest blocks so that none blocks another’s view, and build in local stone that ages into the slope. Water storage and treatment, power backup, fire access and a road a truck can climb in the monsoon decide the layout as much as the view does, so we plan them with the master plan rather than after it.

Mussoorie is about slope, access and winter; Rishikesh about the river and the wellness guest – quiet rooms, spa, open pavilions; Corbett about the forest – low buildings, native planting and dark skies. We read the site and the guest before we read the brand standards.

Our hotels and resorts are designed for IHCL SeleQtions, Hilton, AC Hotels by Marriott, Sarovar, Lemon Tree and ITC’s Epiq Collection. We prepare the concept, key count, areas and massing that owners use to approach an operator, then develop the design with the brand’s technical services team, design the guest room first and build a mock-up where the programme allows. Architecture, interiors, landscape and site supervision come from one studio of 25+ people in New Delhi; Dehradun is a five-hour drive and the hill stations a day trip, so our site engineers visit through construction and the principal architect at each key stage.
