Farmhouse architects in Delhi

A Delhi farmhouse is the one kind of home in the city where the plot is not the constraint. On an acre or more in Chattarpur, Westend Greens, Sultanpur, Rajokri or Bijwasan the questions change: how the house sits in the garden, where the pool and the lawn go, how a party for two hundred works without the family wing noticing, and how the house stays cool through a Delhi June.

Pushpanjali Farm, photographed and filmed on this site, is one answer: a low, long house that opens to its garden on every side, with the formal and family areas separated so that both can be in use at once. We have designed farmhouses and large-plot homes in Delhi since 2009 and carry each through with our own site engineers.

We start with the site plan, not the house: the approach and parking, the lawn that will host the wedding, the pool and its changing rooms, the staff quarters and services yard, the trees worth keeping. The house is then placed to borrow the best of the garden – morning light into the bedrooms, the long view from the living room, evening shade on the verandah.

Delhi farmhouse regulations set limits on built-up area and height, so the plan has to spend that allowance where it matters: generous living and entertaining spaces, a family wing that feels private, and verandahs and pergolas that extend the house without counting against it.

A farmhouse is as much landscape as building, so we design the garden, the water bodies and the lighting with the architecture, and the interiors with both. Stone floors that run from inside to out, deep overhangs, courtyards and screens keep the house cool; local stone, lime plaster and timber age well in the open.
