For Opulo we designed two flagship stores in Delhi, planning the customer route, display systems and lighting so the products lead. Retail work includes façade and signage, display furniture, lighting and back-of-house.

How we plan a store

A store is a route. We begin with how a customer enters, what they see first, where they slow down and where they decide, and then plan display, lighting and seating around that path. The façade and signage are designed with the interior so the store reads as one piece from the street; the stock room, staff areas and services are planned so the shop floor stays uncluttered.

Lighting is the biggest single decision in retail: it has to render the product truthfully, draw the eye to the displays and still make the space feel generous. We design it with the display furniture, which is drawn by us and made to drawing by workshops we have worked with for years.

Flagships, showrooms and what we deliver

The two Opulo flagship stores in Delhi were planned around the brand’s products leading; the same approach has shaped our showrooms for marble and jewellery in Jodhpur. For a retail client we deliver concept and 3D views, plans and elevations, display furniture and joinery drawings, lighting design, materials and a fit-out programme, and our site engineers supervise the work.

We design single stores and roll-out formats, and we can work inside a mall shell, a high-street building or a space the brand already occupies.

Timelines and working inside a mall

Retail runs on opening dates, so we plan backwards from the launch: concept in the first two to three weeks, mall or landlord approvals, fit-out drawings, and a build programme agreed with the contractor. Inside a mall the base-build rules – fire, services, façade zones, working hours – shape the design, and we have worked within them for flagship and showroom formats.

Our site engineers supervise the fit-out and the principal architect reviews lighting and displays before opening.

Materials, signage and the street

Retail finishes take a beating, so we choose floors, counters and wall finishes that look precise on opening day and still look right after three years of footfall: large-format stone and tile, solid-surface and metal counters, veneer and lacquer where hands will not reach. Signage and the shopfront are designed as part of the façade, within the mall’s or the colony’s rules, so the store is recognisable from the road or the atrium.

Where a brand has several stores we write a design standard – the palette, the fixtures, the lighting – so later outlets can be built faster and still look like the flagship.
