Free first meeting · Principal architect reviews every stage · Designing since 2009

For Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences we have designed the main PIMS hospital, the wider medical campus, a city-centre hospital and the student hostel in Udaipur – planning wards, operating theatres, diagnostics, teaching spaces and residences as one working system.

Hospital design is about movement: separating patients, visitors, staff and supplies; keeping infection control simple; planning for equipment and future expansion. We do this alongside the architecture that makes a hospital feel calm.

How a hospital is planned

A hospital is a set of routes that must not cross: patients coming in through emergency and outpatients, visitors, staff, clean supplies and waste. We plan these first, then the departments – wards, operating theatres, ICUs, diagnostics, pharmacy and support – so that each has the adjacency it needs and the services it depends on. Structure and services are planned for heavy equipment and for future change, because a hospital is never finished.

For the PIMS campus this meant designing the main hospital, the medical college, the city-centre hospital and the hostel so they work as one institution with shared infrastructure, while each building can run on its own.

Calm, daylight and the patient

Hospitals are also places where people wait and worry, so we give wards and waiting areas daylight and views, keep corridors legible, and choose finishes that are durable and easy to clean without feeling institutional. Infection control is built into the plan – isolation, air handling, one-way flows – rather than retrofitted.

Our healthcare planning follows NABH and the relevant Indian standards, and we coordinate with the hospital’s medical planners and equipment suppliers so that what is drawn is what the departments can actually use.

Phasing, approvals and equipment

A medical campus grows in stages, so we plan the sequence of works so that existing departments keep running: new blocks sited where construction traffic does not cross patient routes, services sized for the final campus, and shells that can be fitted out as departments are funded. Approvals for healthcare buildings involve fire, environment and health authorities, and we prepare the drawings they ask for.

Equipment decides much of a hospital: theatre sizes, radiology shielding, floor loads and ceiling heights all follow from what will be installed. We coordinate with the hospital’s medical planners and equipment suppliers so that rooms are drawn around real machines, not catalogue sizes.
