The brief
A resort for Hilton Hotels & Resorts on a steep 7,53,588 sq ft site near Madar Lake, Udaipur – 2,33,586 sq ft of rooms, spa, banquets and restaurants.
The idea
Follow the contours. Arrival, banquets, spa and services sit at the bottom of the slope; guests check in and move up by golf cart, leaving traffic and noise behind. Every room is placed for its own view – of the lake, or across the landscaped slopes to the city.
Making it
The villas are built in load-bearing stone masonry, where structure and skin are one. Deep joints and raw, visible mass are left exposed to age, darken and settle into the hillside – the way this region has always built for longevity.
Today
The hillside is being cut and the first masonry walls are going up. Below: a walkthrough of the resort as designed, and a film from the site.
