Lippan, in glass: how a Kutch craft shaped Sea Leaf Resort

How a Kutch craft found its way into every corner of Sea Leaf Resort, Mandvi.

In the villages around Mandvi, women have decorated their homes for generations with Lippan: a paste of clay and camel dung worked into raised patterns on the wall, with small mirrors pressed into it. In lamplight the walls glitter. It is one of the most beautiful things in Kutch, and it was the first thing we thought of when IHCL asked us to design a 172-key resort on the Mandvi coast.

The question was how to honour it without copying it. A resort guest sees a wall from a distance and for a few days; a village home is lived with for a lifetime. Clay and dung are also not materials a hotel can maintain at scale. So we kept what matters about Lippan – the raised pattern, the light caught in small facets, the sense of a wall made by hand – and changed the material. The patterns are rendered in glass mosaic. The move from clay to glass brings light, precision and depth, while the tactile memory of the original stays in the geometry.

Letting the region lead

We wanted the craft to be the beginning of a language, not a single artwork in the lobby. So the local flora and fauna of the coast became the foundation of the design, not an ornament added at the end.

It runs through the furniture, whose forms are drawn from regional botanical patterns, so each piece feels as if it belongs here and nowhere else. It runs into the guest rooms, where a mandala is CNC-carved into Statuario marble behind each bed, and the walls carry a woven finish with a subtle leaf motif taken from the coastal landscape. And it runs across the master plan, with villas and guest blocks set along the shore so that the sea and the garden are the view from almost everywhere.

Why this matters to us

India’s coast has no shortage of resorts that could be anywhere. We wanted a guest at Sea Leaf to know, within a minute of arriving, exactly where they are. The craft of Kutch is not a theme we applied; it is the reason the building looks the way it does.

Sea Leaf is under construction now, with the villas rising along the shore. We will share the finished rooms when they are photographed.
